Man arrested after spray-painting gun control slogan on 9/11 memorial

A 31-year-old man was arrested in New York City on Monday, October 26, after spray-painting a gun control slogan across the names of victims at the 9/11 Memorial. Jonathan Andrew Tijerina faces criminal mischief and graffiti charges for the incident, which occurred at the North Tower reflecting pool in Manhattan.

Tijerina filmed himself applying red paint to the stone panels, covering portions of the engraved names, and posted the video to social media. He cited a recent mass shooting at Florida A&M University as a reason for the act and used his arrest to publicize his organization, Just Stop Killing Kids.

The group used the incident to call on President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to support stricter gun regulations, specifically universal background checks and a national gun registry. Memorial management confirmed that the red paint has been removed and the affected section restored, with investigators estimating the damage at more than $2,500.
