Delhi Township ends LEAP membership after data center proposal
Delhi Township officials have withdrawn from the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) following a special meeting to address a proposed $10 billion data center. The township’s board of trustees voted to end its membership with LEAP on Wednesday, one day after the economic development group publicly introduced the plan to residents.
LEAP and Lighthouse Sustainability proposed a 700-megawatt data center for a 423-acre site at Holt Economic Opportunity Park. The plan, which bypassed the township board in favor of direct resident engagement, aims to triple the township’s annual tax revenue from $23 million to $76 million and establish a $20 million community fund.
Township Supervisor Eddie Montemayor, who also serves on LEAP’s board, did not respond to requests for comment. The proposal faces immediate hurdles, including a 12-month moratorium on data center development that expires in April 2027 and a requirement for rezoning the property, which is currently not zoned for industrial use.
