Senate stalls on permanent daylight saving time despite Trump pressure

The Senate is unlikely to act before the end of the year on a House-passed bill that would make daylight saving time permanent, defying President Donald Trump and dashing the hopes of Americans who do not like having to change their clocks twice a year.

Several senators are holding up the legislation, with opponents arguing that permanent daylight saving time would mean much later sunrises in some states. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., called the practice absurd, noting that Congress has enacted and repealed permanent daylight saving time multiple times in the past.

Trump has aggressively pushed the change, posting on social media that the Senate is letting the bill die and that sunshine is better in the afternoon. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has not weighed in publicly on the House bill, and several Republicans predicted the bill will not come up for a vote before the Nov. 3 midterm election.
