Midterm election results May take days to finalize in key races

Voters in the 2026 midterm elections may not know the winners of several congressional races on election night, a pattern experts say is normal and not indicative of fraud. Election officials and nonpartisan analysts note that close Senate and House races, particularly in states like Michigan, Maine, Iowa, Alaska, Kansas, and Texas, often require days or even weeks to certify final results.

The timing of results depends heavily on state laws regarding mail-in ballots and the volume of votes cast. While some states like Florida often complete unofficial counts quickly, others such as California allow ballots postmarked by Election Day to be received up to a week later. In Detroit, election officials expect to report results for approximately 95% of ballots on election night, though the final winner of the state’s Senate race may depend on processing the remaining absentee votes.

Election technology expert Ryan Macias emphasized that states count and certify results according to their own legislative laws, and that media projections are based on the margin of victory rather than a universal speed standard. With control of the U.S. Senate potentially hinging on a handful of competitive districts, officials warn that late-arriving mail ballots and signature verification processes can extend the timeline for declaring winners.
