Anthropic faces $900 billion in spending commitments ahead of IPO

Anthropic filed its initial public offering registration statement last week, revealing nearly $900 billion in contractual spending commitments that extend into the 2030s. The company, which plans a stock market debut in November, holds $96 billion in cash reserves but faces significant financial obligations to five major technology partners for computational power.

Footnotes in the company's financial disclosures indicate that at least $582 billion of these commitments are non-cancelable payments to Amazon, AMD, Broadcom, Google, and Microsoft. Although these obligations do not currently appear on Anthropic's balance sheet, they represent legal debts that must be paid regardless of the company's ability to afford them, potentially pushing total contractual commitments past one trillion dollars by year's end.

The company's 2026 financial results have not yet undergone formal auditing, and third-quarter data suggests revenue growth slowed during the summer. Analysts note that rising competition, a price war with rivals, and high infrastructure costs are squeezing margins, making it challenging for Anthropic to generate the revenue needed to meet its vast future obligations.
