Canada announces broad retaliatory tariffs as trade tensions with U.S. escalate

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs Tuesday on about $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances and farm equipment. The measures also cover seafood, clothing, cosmetics and toilet paper, with duties reaching as high as 50%.

The tariffs will take effect Sept. 8 after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods following failed trade negotiations. President Donald Trump has threatened additional tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.

Canadian officials also announced a 7.5 billion Canadian dollar support package for affected workers and businesses. The two countries’ closely linked auto, energy, agriculture and manufacturing supply chains face higher costs and continued uncertainty.
