Canada trade fight puts pressure on prices for U.S. households

The Trump administration has imposed 50% tariffs on an estimated $20 billion in Canadian imports after trade talks broke down. Canada plans dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs starting Sept. 8, while the United States announced plans to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel to 50% on Jan. 1, 2027.

The tariffs are expected to raise prices for some alcohol, clothing, jewelry, food, building materials and vehicles. Higher costs for Canadian lumber and steel could also make home construction and renovations more expensive. Proposed beef imports could lower beef prices, but details remain unclear. The trade dispute also threatens to increase energy costs if Canadian exports to the United States are disrupted.
