CDC restores data on defensive gun use, revealing undercount by FBI

The CDC has recently restored a link to the 2013 National Academies of Sciences report that it removed in 2022, providing updated estimates of defensive gun use.

The FBI’s July 30 report identified 408 active‑shooter incidents from 2014‑2025, but the Crime Prevention Research Center found 615 incidents, showing that armed civilians stopped 225 of them—a 36.6% rate over 12 years.

In locations where citizens can legally carry firearms, the CPRC data show a 52.9% stop rate over 12 years, rising to 58.3% in 2025, indicating a significant undercount by the FBI.
