Democrats prepare to take full control of Michigan Legislature

Lawmakers in Lansing are selecting new leaders as Democrats prepare to assume control of both legislative chambers in January. Senate Democrats elected Sen. Darrin Quiroz Camilleri of Trenton as their next majority leader, making him the youngest Senate majority leader in the country and the first Latino to hold the post in Michigan.

Camilleri will succeed Winnie Brinks, who was elected lieutenant governor alongside Governor-elect Jocelyn Benson. Democrats also selected Sen. Kevin Hertel of St. Clair Shores as the next majority floor leader. In the Senate, Democrats will hold a 23-15 majority when the new session begins.

Senate Republicans elected Sen. Roger Hauck of Mount Pleasant to lead their caucus. In the House, Republicans selected Rep. Tom Kunse of Clare as their caucus leader while Democrats, who flipped 11 seats and lead 62-47, look to Ranjeev Puri for the speakership.

Matt Hall of Richland Township remains speaker for the current term. The shift in power follows Democratic victories in the races for governor, secretary of state, and attorney general, expanding their influence across state government.
