DIFS Director applauds new law banning price optimization in insurance

DIFS Director Anita Fox praised Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s signing of Senate Bill 1013, which prohibits insurers from using price optimization in insurance rate filings and strengthens consumer protections for Michiganders.

The new law codifies the 2024 DIFS bulletin and ensures that insurance premiums are based on risk factors rather than customers’ willingness to pay more, giving consumers confidence in fair rates.

DIFS will monitor and enforce the prohibition, and consumers who feel they have been subjected to price optimization can file complaints Monday through Friday 8 a.m. To 5 p.m. At 877‑999‑6442 or online at Michigan.gov/DIFScomplaints.
