East Lansing mother demands answers on officers in fatal shooting

Karyn Kirby, whose son Isaiah Kirby was fatally shot by East Lansing police officers in April, is demanding answers about the status of the four officers involved. At a recent town hall, Kirby stated that the officers are back on duty, a claim city officials have neither confirmed nor denied, citing personnel matters.

The shooting occurred on April 15 after Isaiah Kirby was suspected of stabbing a local attorney. Officers fired approximately 20 shots in three distinct volleys, with two volleys occurring after Kirby was no longer on his feet. The incident has sparked controversy over the use of force, and the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office referred the matter to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.

City officials have withheld the internal investigation findings, which remain ongoing, and have redacted officer names from shift schedules provided in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. This follows a new bargaining agreement that limits public disclosure of officer names in use-of-force reports and restricts the Police Oversight Commission’s ability to discuss specific employees during meetings.
