Eaton County road worker killed in work-zone crash on Lansing Road
A 24-year-old Eaton County Road Commission worker died in a two-vehicle crash inside an active work zone on Lansing Road in Benton Township on Tuesday afternoon, Michigan State Police reported. The collision forced troopers to close the road between Royston Road and Windsor Highway while investigators examined the scene.
The death adds to a growing list of fatalities for road crews in Michigan this year. State officials had already recorded three road worker deaths during the 2026 construction season prior to Tuesday, including two Michigan Department of Transportation employees killed in Ingham County in May and a Branch County Road Commission worker struck on a state highway.
Michigan State Police have not released the name of the worker or detailed the circumstances of the collision, stating that the investigation is ongoing. The crash highlights persistent safety concerns in work zones, where state data shows a 17 percent jump in fatalities in 2024, primarily attributed to speeding and distracted driving.
