Eaton County worker death reignites calls for construction zone safety
On Wednesday, flags were lowered to half‑staff in Charlotte to honor a 24‑year‑old road commission worker who was killed Tuesday afternoon on Lansing Road in Benton Township.
Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez reported that a pickup truck had stopped on Lansing Road at the worker’s direction while road crews were working, and a sanitation truck couldn’t stop in time and hit the pickup, pushing it into parked road commission trucks on the shoulder.
The crash is part of a broader trend of work‑zone accidents on Michigan roads; in 2025 MDOT recorded 5,942 work‑zone crashes, including 24 fatal crashes and 25 fatalities, and 1,199 injuries. Police have increased patrols around construction projects to address speeding and distraction.
