El-Sayed, Benson win as Democrats sweep Michigan races

Abdul El-Sayed and Jocelyn Benson claimed victories in their respective races in the early morning hours of Wednesday, securing key positions for Michigan Democrats. El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate seat, a race called by the Associated Press around 2:30 a.m. Benson is projected to win the governor’s race against Republican John James, succeeding term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Democrats also took control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives nationally, flipping seven Senate seats including Texas. In Michigan’s seventh congressional district, Democrat Will Lawrence declared victory over incumbent Tom Barrett. In the fifth district, incumbent Tim Walberg is projected to defeat Democrat Christian Vukasovich.

In other statewide races, Democrat Eli Savit is projected to win the attorney general race, and Democrat Garlin Gilchrist is projected to win the secretary of state race. The Michigan Supreme Court seats held by Megan Kathleen Cavanagh and Noah Hood are projected to remain with the Democratic-backed candidates. Voters rejected Proposal 1, which asked about a constitutional convention, and approved Proposal 2, which limits utility company contributions to political candidates.
