Federal lawsuit challenges Dearborn’s holiday displays and religious treatment

A federal lawsuit filed Thursday alleges Dearborn spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on Ramadan banners and crescent-moon displays while ignoring requests to recognize Easter and Passover. Margot Cleveland filed the civil rights case against the city and Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, alleging violations of religious-establishment, free-speech and equal-protection rights.

The lawsuit says the city spent $1,500 on Ramadan banners and $5,000 on a crescent-moon display, then expanded its displays in February 2026. It also alleges officials retaliated against Cleveland after she sought equal recognition for Christian and Jewish holidays.
