Indian stock indices slide as banking and tech stocks face selling pressure

Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Monday, with the Nifty 50 falling 1.11% to 22,888.95 and the Sensex dropping 1.17% to 73,852.90. The decline reversed the previous day's recovery, driven by heavy selling in financial services, information technology, and fast-moving consumer goods stocks.

The financial services sector emerged as the weakest performer, declining 1.58% as investors assessed quarterly earnings from major private lenders. Axis Bank fell 4.19%, while HDFC Bank also faced significant selling pressure. The IT sector dropped 1.28%, reversing a strong rally from the previous session, with Infosys declining 2.63% to 1,130.70 rupees.

Broader market sentiment remained cautious amid elevated crude oil prices and global economic uncertainty. The Bank Nifty index slipped 0.64% to 55,488.10, and mid-cap and small-cap stocks declined by approximately 1%, indicating widespread risk aversion among investors.
