Ionia County ISD earns top grade in state gun safety audit
A statewide audit released Thursday found that 58% of Michigan school districts failed to comply with the Safe Homes, Safe Schools law, which requires districts to post specific gun storage information on their websites. The law, which took effect in February 2025, mandates that schools annually inform parents about safe firearm storage and where to obtain free gun locks.
In mid-Michigan, compliance varied significantly, with local districts receiving grades ranging from A to F. Ionia County ISD and Ingham ISD both earned top marks, with auditors specifically citing Ionia County ISD’s webpage as a model for its clear messaging and direct instructions for obtaining free gun locks.
End Gun Violence Michigan, which conducted the audit, noted that the state’s second annual compliance deadline passed on October 1. The organization plans to re-audit district websites each October, focusing on those that previously scored zero, to ensure ongoing adherence to the notification requirements.
