Justice Department monitors polling sites in Lansing and East Lansing

The U.S. Department of Justice monitored polling sites Tuesday in four Michigan cities during the Aug. 4 primary election, including Lansing and East Lansing.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General Dana Nessel said the department sent letters in late June to Detroit, Lansing and East Lansing notifying them that federal election monitors would be placed at some polling locations. The assignments also included Hamtramck when implemented.

The Justice Department said staff from its Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for Michigan’s Eastern and Western districts were assigned to monitor compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections.
