Labor Day closures, travel costs shape holiday weekend plans

Government offices, post offices, courts and schools will be closed on Labor Day, while most major retailers and grocery stores will remain open. Costco will also close, and standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will be unavailable, though some critical services will operate at certain locations.

Travelers face higher costs than last year. AAA says flights to top domestic destinations are nearly 20% more expensive, hotel prices have risen, and regular gasoline averages just under $4.10 a gallon, up 90 cents from a year ago. Cruises departing from U.S. ports are about 4% cheaper.

AAA advises road travelers to check the weather, inspect their vehicles and carry an emergency kit with water, snacks, a flashlight and jumper cables.
