Lansing Advocate clarifies self-defense rights for unhoused residents
Emma Kauffman, a Michigan State University graduate student, presented self-defense legal information to people experiencing homelessness in Lansing following the deaths of five individuals on the River Trail. The presentation, held at The Fledge, aimed to clarify the rights of unhoused residents if they are attacked.
Kauffman explained that Michigan law permits the use of deadly force without a duty to retreat if a person believes it is necessary to prevent death and is in a location where they have a legal right to be. She noted that this protection can be complicated for individuals camping on the River Trail, which closes after dusk, potentially placing them in violation of the statute's location requirements.
Lansing police are investigating the deaths, which began with the discovery of Louis Woodruff in August. Authorities have made one arrest in connection with one of the cases and are asking the public for information. City officials have also considered opening zero-barrier shelters to protect the unhoused community.
