Lansing businesses brace for ripple effects from planned GM layoffs

Businesses around Lansing are preparing for possible economic effects after General Motors announced 350 layoffs at two local facilities beginning Jan. 14, 2027. The cuts involve the Lansing Grand River Assembly and Stamping plant and the Lansing Regional Stamping facility.

Supply chain experts said smaller suppliers that rely heavily on one or two vehicle lines could feel a significant impact. Restaurants, gas stations and barber shops also could see fewer regular customers, while one Lansing restaurant owner said she may need to adjust staffing if business declines.

GM said some operations will continue during the production downtime, including skilled-trades work tied to a $1.25 billion investment and normal operations at the regional stamping facility and other nearby plants.
