Lansing cannabis lab director warns THC labels can distort the market

Cannabis testing labs produce the THC figures Michigan consumers use to compare products, but ACT Lab regional director Middlebrook said the focus on potency can overshadow terpenes and minor cannabinoids that also affect a product’s effects.

Middlebrook said testing results can vary between laboratories, citing one product measured at 26% THC by one lab and 31% by another. Michigan has funded a state reference laboratory to standardize results and audit private labs, but the facility cannot yet accept cannabis because lawmakers have not authorized it to possess the federally illegal substance.

A bill granting that authority passed the Senate 34-1 in March and has remained in a House committee since April.
