Lansing utility reports more cyber probes amid Michigan water system attacks

Federal investigators are tracking suspected Iranian-backed hackers who targeted nine municipal water systems across Michigan in a coordinated cyberattack.

The Lansing Board of Water and Light was not among the nine systems, but officials said the utility has seen more attempts to scan its firewalls and exploited ports. A spokesperson said no attempts got past BWL firewalls.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy said none of the targeted systems were compromised and there were no known public health impacts.

Michigan State University cybersecurity expert Tom Holt said water system vulnerability can depend on funding and infrastructure, especially in remote or rural areas.
