Mason officials address data center questions at town hall

On Monday night, Mason residents gathered at a town hall to discuss the future of data centers in the city. The meeting, which drew a sizable crowd, was organized as a moderated panel between the Mason City Council and the city manager, allowing citizens to voice their support and concerns.

Randy Cantu, a local resident near the proposed data center site on Vevay Township, had been active in the discussion, protesting on the street before the meeting. Public comment lasted nearly two hours, and Mayor Russell Whipple emphasized that the town hall would help clear misconceptions about data centers and the city’s role.

The city plans to continue gathering public input to craft ordinances and mitigate impacts if a formal proposal moves forward. The landowner of the site on Columbia Road has applied for annexation to the state boundary commission, which would bring the land into city limits after the Vevay Township board voted not to supply the land for development.
