Massachusetts gun control ad sparks debate over technical accuracy
A new television advertisement featuring U.S. Representative Jake Auchincloss assembling a replica rifle has intensified the campaign over Question 9 in Massachusetts. The Newton Democrat and former Marine Corps captain urges voters to support the measure, which would extend sweeping gun control laws including restrictions on ghost guns and assault weapons.
Critics argue the ad relies on false authority and technical inaccuracies to sway voters. Firearm expert Len Savage notes that while an unfinished lower receiver can be ordered online, federal law requires it to be transferred by a licensed dealer, a step the ad implies is unnecessary. Savage also highlights that serial numbers for all firearms were only mandated by the Gun Control Act in 1968.
The law at issue, Chapter 135 of the Acts of 2024, expands Extreme Risk Protection Orders to school administrators and healthcare providers, raises age limits for certain rifles to 21, and requires serial numbers for privately made firearms. Opponents contend these provisions allow for the confiscation of arms from citizens who have not been charged with a crime, while proponents argue the measures help police solve crimes and ensure accountability.
