Michigan gas prices climb to $4.54, diesel hits record $6.34

Michigan's average gas prices rose to $4.54 on Sept. 16, up more than 10 cents from Tuesday and 30 cents from a week ago. The increase follows a record diesel price of $6.34 set earlier this week. Compared to the same period last year, prices were $3.12 in 2025, leaving a gap of 70 cents from the state record.

AAA’s county-by-county map shows the cheapest prices in Wayne, Macomb, and St. Clair counties for Metro Detroit drivers, while Oakland, Washtenaw, and Livingston counties have higher than average rates. The highest prices are in Marquette County, at $4.62. GasBuddy also lists Detroit, Southgate, and Morenci as the most affordable stations on Wednesday afternoon.

Analyst Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy notes that the spike may not be finished, with a 48‑hour surge expected across the Midwest. He attributes the rise to ongoing Middle East tensions, new refinery attacks, and seasonal shifts to cheaper winter‑blend gasoline. Motorists should anticipate continued volatility in the coming days.
