Michigan Jewish Democrats split over Senate race and El-Sayed

More than 400 Democratic Jewish Michiganders have signed a letter backing Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. The signatories said they feel threatened and alienated by El-Sayed’s political allies and warned that his election could strengthen what they called far-left and anti-Jewish elements in the Democratic Party.

Former Rep. Andy Levin, who endorsed El-Sayed in November 2025, said the letter reflects a minority view and accused longtime American Israel Public Affairs Committee supporters of driving it. Attorney Daniel Cherrin, a signatory who said he has not attended an AIPAC event in more than 30 years, said he is concerned about the movement supporting El-Sayed and its effect on his community.

The dispute also involves Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, a prominent El-Sayed surrogate whom El-Sayed has sought to distance himself from. El-Sayed said last month that he had no plans to continue campaigning with Piker.
