Michigan small game seasons set to open Sept. 15

Several Michigan small game hunting seasons, including cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, fox, gray squirrel, ruffed grouse and woodcock, are set to open statewide Sept. 15, 2026, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR also plans to release pheasants at 13 southern Michigan game and wildlife areas this year, including Dansville State Game Area in Ingham County. Most Lower Peninsula pheasant season opens Oct. 20 and runs through Nov. 14.

Hunters pursuing small game must have a Michigan base license. Some squirrel, woodchuck and crow seasons have separate dates or location-specific restrictions.
