Milwaukee archbishop Apologizes for praying over Trump in Oval Office

Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee apologized on Sunday for joining eleven other bishops in praying over President Donald Trump in the Oval Office last Thursday, twelve days before the midterm elections. In a public letter to the Catholics of his archdiocese, Grob admitted he had reservations about the visit and accused the White House of manipulating the moment for political gain.

Grob wrote that the administration posted video and photos of the prayer without the consent of the participants, turning a sacred act into a campaign photo opportunity. He stated that the bishops were told the meeting would be private and that they did not know a video was being shot until after the fact.

The apology comes as the archbishop visits the Dominican Republic with a group of pilgrims. Grob is the first of the twelve bishops to publicly express regret for the event, which occurred during a discussion on immigration enforcement and visas for religious workers arranged by the Heritage Foundation.
