Northern Michigan wildfires burn amid drought conditions
Wildfire crews are battling two blazes in Northern Michigan amid major drought conditions and major fire danger. The Ridge Fire, covering approximately 256 acres, is burning 10 miles northwest of Marquette between County Road 510 and North Basin Drive. The second blaze, the Craig Lake Fire, covers 309 acres in a remote area with rugged terrain and grew from 25 acres on Sunday.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports 40 firefighters on the ground for the Ridge Fire and another 12 at Craig Lake, with additional support from Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff's, and the DNR.
Both fires are fueled by a mix of conifers and hardwoods on ridge tops and a mix of balsam and spruce in the lowlands, while winds carry smoke southeast from Ontario down to the Midwest and Northeast, adding to the 850 active wildfires across Canada as of Thursday.
