One dead after boat runs aground in Detroit River

One boater died and another was hospitalized after a 37-foot boat ran aground early Sunday in the Detroit River near Celeron Island, Grosse Ile Township police said.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call by radio around 2:52 a.m. and notified local police, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and a boat towing service. Emergency personnel found the boat on shoals southeast of the island, with about 80% of it out of the water.

Police said a Brownstown Township resident aboard the boat died at the scene. The vessel's owner, from Rockwood, was taken to a hospital, and officials had not disclosed the severity of the injuries.

Investigators are working to determine who was operating the boat and whether alcohol or other factors contributed. Police said the boat left Humbug Marina in Gibraltar around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
