Pennsylvania Democrats secure trifecta to push gun reform legislation
Democrats claimed a governing trifecta in Pennsylvania following the November 3 elections, securing control of the state Senate, expanding their majority in the House, and retaining the governor’s office. This political shift gives the party its greatest opportunity in more than 30 years to pass gun reform bills that have previously languished in the state Legislature.
State leaders have pledged to pursue measures long blocked by Republicans, including a ban on homemade ghost guns, expanded background checks, a red flag law, and an outlawing of conversion devices that allow handguns to fire rapidly. These legislative goals align with recent data showing a 39 percent drop in homicides and a 45 percent decline in crimes involving firearms since 2022.
Advocates and elected officials celebrated the electoral victory as a mandate for public safety. Former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords described the outcome as a major win for a state that has experienced significant gun violence, while Governor Josh Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis emphasized their commitment to investing in communities and maintaining the momentum in violence prevention.
