Poll finds voters favor Democrats over GOP on economy for first time in years

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that Americans picked Democrats over Republicans as better stewards of the economy for the first time in nearly a decade, while President Donald Trump's approval rating fell to 35%. The poll, conducted from Wednesday through Monday, showed 37% of registered voters said Democrats have a better approach to the economy compared with 36% for Republicans, with 27% unsure.

Trump's approval dropped from 37% in the prior month's poll to 35%, within one point of the lowest mark of his term. Republicans had held a clear economic advantage through Trump's first term, all of President Joe Biden's tenure, and into the start of Trump's second term, but that edge steadily eroded in recent months as gasoline prices rose following the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and the ensuing conflict. Gasoline prices have surged more than 25% since the war began, adding over a dollar per gallon at the pump.

The poll also found 42% of registered voters would back a Democrat in congressional elections compared with 37% for a Republican, with independents favoring Democrats by 12 points. Republicans are defending narrow majorities in both chambers ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Trump has dismissed the polling, posting on Truth Social that his real numbers are the best of his career. The survey polled 4,505 U.S. adults with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
