Rangers search for overdue hiker on Isle Royale

Rangers at Isle Royale National Park are searching for 70‑year‑old Craig Berg of Royal Oak, Michigan, who was on a more‑than‑weeklong solo hike on the island. Berg was scheduled to take the Ranger III ferry back to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula last Saturday, but family members reported on Sunday that he had not arrived home. Park Service officials said search operations have been ongoing since that report, and authorities have not asked for public help.

Isle Royale, located off the northeast tip of Minnesota, stretches about 45 miles long and 9 miles wide. The park has two visitor‑service hubs at either end of the island and no roads or motor vehicles across its wilderness. A network of rugged trails, including the Greenstone Ridge Trail that spans nearly the entire length of the island, supports the search.
