Republican senator questions taxpayer-funded ads promoting Trump

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., criticized taxpayer-funded White House ads featuring President Donald Trump, saying public money should not be used by politicians to promote themselves. He told CBS News that there “ought to be a rule” against such spending and acknowledged there probably already is one.

The White House has called the ads public service announcements, but one was originally produced for Trump’s 2024 campaign and another aired nationally during a college football game. The spending has drawn scrutiny over whether government employees involved in producing the ads violated the Hatch Act.

Kennedy also said politicians should not have public buildings named after them while they are alive. He did not announce legislation addressing either issue.
