Republicans urge Supreme court to back Jew in prayer gathering case

A group of over 50 Republicans has submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, urging judges to dismiss a federal court ruling that blocked a Jewish man from suing his city after he was told he could not host a prayer gathering in his home.

The brief argues that the ruling violates the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act and imposes unnecessary procedural hurdles on religious claimants. The case, which the Supreme Court agreed to take up in its upcoming session starting in October, could expand the power of religious groups to challenge zoning laws.

Lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, signed on to the brief, arguing that local governments should not impose land use regulations that substantially burden religious exercise.
