Sony says tariff refund will not be returned to PlayStation buyers

Sony said none of the roughly $500 million it received in tariff reimbursements will be returned to PlayStation customers, despite claims that tariff-linked price increases harmed buyers.

The company’s lawyers argued that console pricing reflects factors including inflation, currency fluctuations, component costs, logistics, competition and demand. Sony had received about 70% of the refund, or roughly $356 million, between April and June 2026, with most of the money reinvested in its gaming divisions.

The position has drawn renewed criticism from PlayStation fans amid broader complaints about console prices and Sony’s plans to end support for physical games after January 2028.
