Sparrow breaks ground on $83M behavioral health hospital in Lansing

University of Michigan Health Sparrow broke ground Wednesday on the Janice M. Granger Behavioral Health Building, an $83 million project in Lansing aimed at expanding mental health care access in the area.

The 64-bed facility will serve adult, geriatric, and child and adolescent patients, marking the first local inpatient option for minors. Michael Nanzer, executive director for behavioral health at UM Health Sparrow, said families currently must travel at least an hour away for inpatient care for children under 18.

The building is named for Janice Granger, a nurse who focused on behavioral health throughout her career. Margaret Dimond, regional president of U-M Health, said a donation from the Granger family, including Alton Granger, was the largest in Sparrow Health System history and made the project possible.

The facility is expected to open in about two years and is currently 70% funded.
