State attorneys general join Tesla appeal of crash verdict

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, along with attorneys general in Alabama and Georgia, joined Tesla’s appeal of a $243 million verdict from a Miami courtroom and asked that the verdict be set aside or the damages reduced.

Naibel Benavides Leon died and Dillon Angulo was seriously injured in 2019 when a driver using Tesla’s automated driving system drove through a Key Largo intersection at 62 mph. A jury found Tesla 33% responsible for the crash and found that its Autopilot system was defective and gave drivers a false sense of security.

U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom rejected Tesla’s request to toss the verdict, writing that trial evidence “more than supports” it. Uthmeier argues he is defending Florida’s business-friendly tort laws.
