Trump criticizes Pirro after dropped reflecting pool vandalism case

Donald Trump said Monday he was “disappointed” with U.S. attorney Jeanine Pirro after her office dropped vandalism charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn in a case involving the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.

The Justice Department dismissed the criminal case last Friday. Hearn, one of seven people charged, had faced a felony property destruction charge carrying a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $1,000 fine. He pleaded not guilty last month.

Pirro’s office said documents from the Interior Department showed the pool was already damaged before Hearn touched the water on June 19, and that the damage resulted from a flawed installation rather than vandalism as initially represented.

Trump declined to answer whether he was reconsidering Pirro’s role. The Guardian cited one person familiar with the matter who said Trump was furious with Pirro and believed it was highly likely she would be removed from the job.
