Trump signs memorandum to overhaul Navy shipbuilding programs

President Donald Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum on Friday directing changes to Navy shipbuilding and ship repair programs, the White House said.

The administration said the memorandum is intended to fix long-term problems in the programs and restore capacity and competition within the U.S. maritime industrial base.

The White House said the action is meant to expand commercial shipbuilding capacity, build up the shipbuilding workforce and strengthen alliances tied to the maritime industry.
