Twenty-five states challenge Trump administration tariffs

Twenty-five states sued President Donald Trump’s administration Monday over new tariffs they said were a pretext for replacing import taxes struck down by the Supreme Court in February.

The United States imposed tariffs of 10% to 12.5% last month on 59 countries and the European Union, accusing them of failing to do enough to stop imports produced by forced labor. The tariffs took effect as temporary tariffs adopted after the Supreme Court defeat expired.

The coalition argued in court that there was no rational connection between forced-labor concerns and blanket global tariffs, calling the action arbitrary and contrary to law. The White House defended the move as a lawful response to foreign policies it said burden U.S. commerce.
