U.S. and Australia plan deeper military cooperation in Pacific

The United States and Australia announced plans to strengthen defense cooperation and deterrence amid China’s growing influence in the Pacific.

Defense officials agreed to accelerate initiatives at Australian bases, expand joint logistics and improve interoperability through military exercises. The cooperation includes U.S. training, equipment storage and rotational deployments, though it was not clear whether more U.S. troops would be stationed in Australia.

The two countries also discussed expanding cooperation on guided weapons and next-generation military capabilities. Their partnership includes the AUKUS pact with Britain, which includes plans for U.S.-commanded submarines to rotate through an Australian naval base beginning in 2027.
