Underwood’s first game sparks job‑security debate as Michigan faces Oklahoma

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood struggled heavily in the first game of the season against Western Michigan, sparking speculation that he may be fighting for his job. Underwood finished 12 of 22 for 170 yards with an interception, and the Michigan offense sputtered after a 75‑yard opening drive. Sources have told On3 that Underwood had a strong end of fall camp, putting together some of his best practices yet as a Wolverine. That didn’t show Saturday, but it was his first game with new offensive coordinator Jason Beck, and the 19‑year‑old quarterback is working on building confidence in the new system.

Underwood was named the starting quarterback in his freshman season at Michigan, starting 13 games. He is now under a second offensive coordinator and just turned 19 in the middle of August. Whittingham said earlier this week that Underwood’s job security “is not infinite. At some point, we’ve got to turn a corner.” Whittingham announced that true freshman Tommy Carr will serve as Underwood’s backup.

Underwood has another chance to prove himself on Saturday afternoon, as number 11 Oklahoma visits Michigan. The upcoming game will test his performance and the coaching staff’s confidence in his play.
