US sanctions target Cuban food import and port operators

The U.S. State Department announced broad economic sanctions against Cuba in July that target sectors previously spared, including parts of the country’s food supply system.

The sanctions singled out Cuba’s state importer, GECOMEX, and port operator, GEMAR, limiting the Cuban government’s ability to buy agricultural commodities and food processing equipment from third countries.

The measures followed what was described as a monthslong U.S. oil blockade against Cuba. A U.S. congressional delegation that visited in early July described conditions there as a “silent Gaza.”
