West Michigan transit projects receive $65 million in state grant funding
On Tuesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a $65 million grant package through the Infrastructure Projects Authority Fund, targeting transit projects across West Michigan. The package includes a $6.371.927 Berrien County Transit Authority Implementation Project, a $6 million Calhoun County transportation authority plan, and a $4.3 million Newaygo County transit system.
The Berrien County project will establish a unified public transportation authority and introduce service to currently unserved areas. The Calhoun County project will plan and design a Next Generation Multimodal Transportation Center in Battle Creek, while the Ionia County project will add three accessible vehicles and two new weekday routes to its microtransit service.
Additional funding will support transit services during major events in Downtown Grand Rapids and enhancements to Ottawa County’s Harbor Transit Multimodal Transportation System, extending weekday and Saturday service hours and adding a connection to Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus. The Macatawa Area Express award will fund an architectural and engineering study to relocate its downtown Holland hub to Westshore Mall.
