White House boosts Trump’s call to rename New Mexico “New America”

The White House on Sunday reposted an image from President Donald Trump depicting New Mexico as “New America,” with “Mexico” crossed out on a map. Neither post explained the move or indicated that it represented a formal policy proposal.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the idea, saying the state’s name was not up for debate. Unlike geographic features that can be renamed for federal use, a president cannot unilaterally change a state’s name, and no formal effort has been announced.
