Whitmer endorses Benson after primary win at Lansing rally
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson celebrated her Democratic gubernatorial primary win with a handful of dozen supporters at a Lansing campaign event, joined by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who formally endorsed her.
Whitmer credited her administration with securing free breakfast and lunch for public school students, free community college, free pre-K, and expanded reproductive and LGBTQ+ protections, urging voters to continue that agenda rather than reverse it.
Benson thanked Whitmer for her support and recalled their first campaign together eight years ago. Both Democrats criticized Republican nominee U.S. Rep. John James over his healthcare voting record, and Benson told reporters she intends to unify the party ahead of the November election.
