Senate passes short-term bill to avert shutdown before elections

The Senate voted 90-6 overnight Saturday to approve a short-term funding measure that would keep federal agencies funded into early December and avoid a government shutdown during campaign season.

The bill would generally fund the federal government at current levels through Dec. 11, with negotiated exceptions. The House still must approve the measure when members return from August recess before it can go to President Donald Trump for his signature.

Democrats secured language barring money transfers to the Border Patrol and rejected a White House request for $1 billion for early work on a new battleship class. The bill also delays a national ban on most intoxicating hemp products by one month and temporarily blocks new rules requiring senior political review of federal grants.
