Abortion rights groups warn Blanche could target medication access

Reproductive health advocates warned that newly confirmed Attorney General Todd Blanche could pursue new restrictions on abortion access, including in states where the procedure is legal.

Blanche was confirmed early Saturday on a 50-49 vote. Advocates cited leaked audio in which he said a post-Roe abortion victory would be “permanent” and referred to limits involving mail-order abortion drugs.

The Justice Department previously said Blanche’s comments concerned mail-order abortion drugs, not a broader expansion of federal control over states. During his confirmation hearing, Blanche said he would review the Justice Department’s interpretation of the 1873 Comstock Act, which addresses mailing abortion-related materials.
